We are two 5th grad classes consisting of 41 students. Our town is located in Southwest Indiana about 100 miles from our state capital, Indianapolis. We live in a rural area of Indiana mainly consisting of farming. We have a small percentage of Amish students. Our elementary school is around 600 students which consists of K-6 grades. Our high school is located on the same campus so we have the opportunity to interact with the students from the high school through cadet teaching, buddy reading and email buddies.

Project Information

At North Daviess, our fifth grade students decided one problem they see, is there are many children who are in need, and have a lot of sadness in their lives. Our classes are working on various projects to help bring smiles to the children in hospitals (Riley’s Children, St. Jude Children’s, and our local Daviess Co Hospital), as well as Head Start, and student who come in new to our school.

Students are making craft packets which have material and activities for the children at the hospitals to do, students made and printed their own books which they will read to make audio books, they donated other books to send and material for decorations. Students also put together welcome packets with school materials to give the new students who arrive at school, and as a school, we collected for leukemia (Pennies for Patients). The children are excited and proud to have been a part of making a difference. We will continue our project throughout the school year.
